While doing my usual search for cemeteries, graveyards and cenotaphs, I came across a location named 'Tiger Dunlop's Tomb'. Upon clicking the link I discovered that it was located in Goderich, just off of some local trails. This was definitely a unique location I had to visit, as it appeared to have a tomb behind a gated wall and a beautiful view of Lake Huron to boot.
Tiger Dunlop was from Scotland and moved to Upper Canada after becoming a surgeon in the army. During the war of 1812 he treated wounded soldiers, and later would go to India where he would attempt to help clear tigers from the Bay of Bengal so that the land could be developed. He was unsuccessful but this is where he earned his nickname 'Tiger'. Dunlop returned to home to Scotland where he remained until he would return to do business with John Galt (the founder of Guelph, ON).
Dunlop then remained in Canada after establishing a new home for himself: Gairbraid, just outside of Goderich, ON. His brother, Robert came to live with him in Goderich, and was a notable figure as he campaigned against slavery in Canada. Robert died at the Gairbraid estate in 1841. Tiger continued to work and live in Canada, dabbling in politics, entrepreneurship and other endevours until his death in 1848. He was regarded as having a 'strong presence' due to his height and his bright, red hair. He also enjoyed alcohol and parties, and was remembered for his sense of adventure and his witty speeches at parliament.
